Inspector Cluesew Presents:

Case #110: "No Strings Attached"
Part 6

Merry May © 1998

Join Inspector Cluesew for a venture into the unknown (for awhile, that is!). Instructions for this mystery quilt project are revealed bit by bit, so you won't have a clue to what you're making until you're nearly finished! Choose to make either a Small (45" x 54") or Giant (90" x 108") quilt top as you pillage and plunder those spare strips that keep piling up (you can't hide them from Inspector Cluesew!)

Editor's Note: The first part of this mystery quilt appeared in Lady's Circle Patchwork Quilting prior to its ceasing publication. If you began the quilt based on its publication there, you may now complete it using the instructions that will be published here at The Quilt Channel in six parts every two weeks.

Please read all instructions before beginning. All measurements include 1/4" seam allowances, unless indicated otherwise. Try to be as accurate as possible.

PART 6: The Final Chapter

Measure both the length and width of your quilt top, and write down the exact dimensions.

LENGTH:

WIDTH:

(HINT: It is much easier to measure these if you have access to a carpenter's measuring tape - the kind with the spring retractor, and the stop mechanism to keep the tape from rolling back up. I keep one of these small, 12-foot tapes in my traveling quilt bag. It comes in handy quite often!)

Next, cut two of your 5" wide Border strips (which you cut back in Part 1 of this series) to the Length measurement you recorded above. Cut the remaining two strips to the Width measurement.

Pin and sew the long Border strips to each side of your pieced quilt top, using 1/4" seam. Press the seam allowances toward the Border strip.

Now, remember the four 5" squares which you foundation pieced way back during Part 2 of this series? It's now time to sew them to each end of your two remaining Border strips. Press seam allowances toward the Border strips.

PLEASE NOTE: Be sure to lay out and check the direction of the strips on the 5" foundation-pieced blocks before attaching them to the ends of your Border strips. You probably won't want them going in all different directions!

Finally, attach these rows to the top and bottom of your quilt top, again checking the placement of the 5" pieced blocks before pinning and sewing. Press seam allowances toward the Border strips once again.

VOILA! You have just successfully completed Inspector Cluesew's Case #110!

Inspector Cluesew asks you to sign, date, and document your quilt, in order to reduce the number of anonymous "mystery quilts" for future quilt historians to decipher!
