Inspector Cluesew Presents:

Case #110: "No Strings Attached"
Part 2

Merry May © 1998

Join Inspector Cluesew for a venture into the unknown (for awhile, that is!). Instructions for this mystery quilt project are revealed bit by bit, so you won't have a clue to what you're making until you're nearly finished! Choose to make either a Small (45" x 54") or Giant (90" x 108") quilt top as you pillage and plunder those spare strips that keep piling up (you can't hide them from Inspector Cluesew!)

Editor's Note: The first part of this mystery quilt appeared in Lady's Circle Patchwork Quilting prior to its ceasing publication. If you began the quilt based on its publication there, you may now complete it using the instructions that will be published here at The Quilt Channel in six parts every two weeks over the next few months.

Please read all instructions before beginning. All measurements include 1/4" seam allowances, unless indicated otherwise. Try to be as accurate as possible.

Part 2:

Dig out the four 5” squares of muslin (or other foundation fabric) which you cut during Part 1 of this series.

While you’re digging, also pull out some of your Medium and Dark fabrics.  If you haven’t already done so, cut some of them into strips of varying widths; anything  from 1” wide up to and including 2 1/2” wide by Width of Fabric (selvage to selvage).

Lay the first strip diagonally, right side up, on top of one of your 5” squares as shown in DIAGRAM A.

Next, lay another strip, right sides together with your first strip, aligning  the long edges of the two strips.  Sew all three layers together using 1/4” seam, as shown in  DIAGRAM B.  Press the second strip back.

If you wish, you may now turn the piece over (so the muslin side is on top), and trim the excess strips off with scissors to within 1/4” of the outer edge of your muslin square.

Repeat with a new strip on the other side of your first strip.  Then, add more strips until the muslin is completely covered.

Turn the piece over again so the muslin side is on top.  Trim the piece to exactly 5” square with your rotary cutting equipment.

Repeat this entire procedure on your remaining three 5” squares of muslin.  Set these units aside until later.

Next, find the 9 7/8” squares of your Light fabric(s) which you cut during Part 1 of this series.  Lay each square, wrong side up, on your table.  Draw a single pencil line once diagonally across the square, from corner to corner, as shown in DIAGRAM C.

Set these units aside until later.

Now you are ready to go on to part 3!
