Prayer quilts provide peace

By Richard Dymond

MANATEE, FL - With its textured feel and patchwork of colors, a quilt can delight the senses and create a rush of happy memories.

But a group of local women say a quilt may even possess the power to heal and bring peace to people going through tough circumstances.

"I was nervous about my upcoming surgery so I had the nurses put my prayer square under the table in the operating room," said Judy Bogue, a local woman who needed elbow surgery after a fall. "It made me feel comfortable."

Bogue is among 20 people, including some premature babies and other youngsters, who have received prayer quilts and smaller prayer squares sewn by Prayers & Squares, a national prayer quilt ministry with a local chapter based out of The Church at Bradenton - First Church of God, 2520 43rd St. W.

The chapter was started by church members Wendy Jo Lowe and Nadine Cunningham.

"I find the work immensely satisfying," Lowe said of her new volunteer life as a quilter. "It's a multi-generational activity. We have kids of all ages taking part."
