Quilt to showcase Pittsburgh area's history

Preserving local history is the mission of the California Area Historical Society, a task society Vice President Patricia Cowen takes very seriously.

For her latest project, she is making a quilt that will display the signatures of people who have had an impact on the area's history. The quilt will consist of 84, 6-inch patches with signatures of prominent historical figures, such as Civil War veterans, and former California University of Pennsylvania professors and administrators, Patricia Cowen said.

They are being sewn into the quilt using computer-generated patterns taken from the authentic signatures. In addition, Cowen also hopes to include signatures from current California-area residents who wish to highlight their presence in the community by having their names displayed on the quilt.
