Fun New Quilt Contest!

The Alliance for American Quilts just announced a quilt contest to help celebrate the fact that this terrific non-profit is moving to its first real home, in Asheville, North Carolina. (It's been operating out of a co-founder's home for years.)

For the "Put a Roof Over Our Head" contest, all you have to do is make a quilt by May incorporating a charming house pattern designed by renowned quiltmaker Yvonne Porcella, which can be found at the Alliance's website along with all the other contest info (go to and click on the contest logo).

Top winners of the "Put a Roof Over Our Head" contest will receive either a Bernina sewing machine or a whole package of software from Electric Quilt Co. But even if you don't win, your quilt will travel to shows and exhibits all over the country and may also be displayed at the Alliance's new offices in Asheville. Eventually, all or most of the quilts will be auctioned off to raise money for the Alliance, whose mission is to preserve and share the story of quilts and quilters. (Among other things, it maintains an amazing website that is like a virtual museum, a place to see and study thousands of gorgeous quilts and learn about their makers.)

I should also add that you can vote on the best quilts in this contest, but only if you're a member of the Alliance. You'll find out about that too at
